![]() However, and there is also a however, why did they have to make the 3rd prisoner fictional? Tim Jenkins was real, Stephen Lee was real yet Leonard Fontaine was fictional. Not knowing if they survived or escaped helped me feel the tension. In short, don't be put of by people and their politics and watch a half decent film about a couple of guys (who happen to be wrongfully imprisoned during a crappy time in SA history) who are trying to escape from prison.Īs a fan of real life movies I had to watch it and I found this to be a very tense and engaging film. The directing was pretty good and the steady momentum kept me interested. I think Radcliffe is turning into a really strong character actor. Some good acting by Daniel Radcliffe (I'm not his biggest fan) - he seems to be coming up the same way Leonardo DiCaprio did in that DiCaprio seemed suddenly to find his feet and never looked back after that. It's a little steady, maybe a little predictable in the same way Titanic was predictable, but quite watchable. The film, after it's introduction, focuses on the escape. There's lots of reviews and criticism bemoaning all of that and switching off - boo hoo, you over-analysed it, was triggered by the politics and missed a decent film. It's set in South Africa during Apartheid, but it doesn't demonise whites or point any fingers - it doesn't need to, it's already well documented - it simply uses the era to initialise the plot and provide a backdrop. I'm not particularly WOKE, the fact that an Englishman played a South African offends me as much as an Englishman (or an Australian, or Canadian, etc. I have no idea what an authentic South African accent sounds like, good job for me apparently (who cares?). This is an olds school film, no CGI just actors, acting. I think these days people expect far to much. Its a good plot with periods of intense drama. If caught, like the characters in the film, they would have been seen as traitors to their country, for siding with South Africans. I'm sure there were many white South Africans that as human beings could see that the Apartheid regime was evil and unjust and fought to bring equality to the land. The fact that its also based upon a true story always works for me too. I love prison escape films so that's a bonus. Daniel Radcliffe is a great actor, and you can see this from his portrayal of Tim. OK so the accents are a bit suspect at times, but the South African accent is not the easiest to get spot on. Sad that they were so triggered that it put them off watching a good film. Its not "woke" to describe something from history that was fact. The brutal treatment that black people were subjected to was horrific. If those people knew anything about South African history during the Apartheid regime, they would have known that that was how things were. So firstly, those 1* reviews! It's sad now after watching this film, going back to those 1* reviews about the "privileged white man" comments in the opening scene.
